2018-2019 SoTL Cohort

Since June 2018, fourteen U of T continuing appointment faculty have been working in a Cohort on individual SoTL projects with the core goal to enhance student learning at our institution. During the year-long program, participants have been supported by CTSI facilitators, U of T collaborators, and peer participants, building their skills in designing and implementing a research project that is situated in course experiences. Each participant will present their project as a Poster at the May 28th 2019 University of Toronto Teaching and Learning Symposium. This culminating activity will showcase their commitment to systematically exploring a teaching inquiry that has sparked their interest and passion.

Information on the Program

PLEASE NOTE: the submission and selection period for the 2018-2019 cohort are closed.

Have you tried new teaching strategies in your class and wondered how they contributed to your students’ learning experiences? Have you designed a new assessment approach that you think would be meaningful in other courses? Or wondered about the impact of a class activity on students’ understanding of the course material? Have you ever thought about sharing your teaching ideas/experiences with other members of the University of Toronto community?

These questions indicate a reflective and scholarly approach to one’s teaching and are a part of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), defined as, “the systematic study of teaching and/or learning and the public sharing and review of such work through presentations, performance, or publications” (McKinney, 2006: 39). Sharing amongst a community of teacher-scholars is a key aspect of SoTL and an important goal of CTSI programming.

CTSI is currently welcoming applicants to join a SoTL Cohort Program that will run from June 2018 to May 2019. During the program, participants will develop their own SoTL project from inception through to publicly sharing their inquiry/research experience at the annual Spring University of Toronto Teaching and Learning Symposium. Supported by CTSI facilitators, U of T collaborators, and peer participants, faculty will work through the steps of the research process, using an example drawn from a question(s) they have from their course experiences. Through participating in this program, faculty will develop and/or further enhance their skills in research, leadership, improving their teaching, documenting this process, and interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty.

This Program is open to continuing status faculty members with various SoTL experience levels who will work in a supported, cohort-based peer program to conduct inquiry/research in their teaching.

Eligibility to participate:

  • Teaching a Fall 2018 or Winter 2019 course that will serve as the site of inquiry/research
  • Faculty members with continuing appointments
  • Attend the June 14, 2018 full-day Introductory SoTL Cohort Workshop at CTSI
  • Commitment over the program to the following:
    • attend the October 24, 2018 SoTL Cohort Work-in-Progress Workshop (morning)
    • engage in at least one SoTL Consultation meeting with a CTSI staff member
    • participate as a member of the SoTL Cohort Program panel at the Spring 2019 Teaching and Learning Symposium
    • provide feedback to CTSI on the SoTL Cohort Program experience
    • attend at least three out of six CTSI workshops (each 1-2 hours length) in the SoTL 2018-19 Series.

A Letter of Completion will be provided.
